We Honor Our Veterans… And Then We Sweat
Welcome back! Last week, we talked with Bram Wiley about meditation and its many benefits. We all get a little bogged down by the daily act of living, so it was a good reminder to take a step back and just… breathe… So, maybe this is a good time to go read / re-read that article.
You see Spencer Herrstrom every day at La Jolla Sports Club, but did you know he is also an Army vet? In honor of Veteran’s Day, Spencer answered a few of our questions and then promptly put us through a solid workout (photos below).

Why did you join the Army?
After spending a year and a half in college, I was unsure of the direction I wanted to go while in school. I wasn’t putting in my best effort and didn’t really think school was for me. At the time, I had an overwhelming sense of patriotism and the Army offered to pay for college after service. I knew I would have the opportunity for school if I chose to return later, so I signed up and shipped off to basic training.
What did you do while you were in the service?
My MOS (editor: Military Occupational Specialty) was Airborne Infantry. I served as a SAW (editor: Squad Automatic Weapon) gunner for two years before becoming a Heavy Weapons squad leader. I served two tours in Afghanistan.
What are some positives you learned in the miltary that you’ve since applied to your professional and personal life?
I drew many positives from being in the military. I learned one, to never take life for granted, as it can change at any moment. I also learned to find the positives in any situation regardless of the circumstance. I also learned key problem-solving skills and learned to put the team before myself.
What brought you to La Jolla Sports Club?
After getting out of the military, I decided to return to school to pursue my bachelors with a renewed vision of what I wanted to do. I am currently in my junior year pursuing a bachelors in Economics at San Diego State, on top of managing the Customer Service Department at La Jolla Sports Club. I was attracted to LJSC for my passion of health and fitness and love that LJSC is a local family-owned business and to me, it really does feel like home.

Spencer’s form is pretty spot-on, but if you have any questions or need assistance, be sure to grab a La Jolla Sports Club Personal Trainer.
Is there a vet you’d like to publicly recognize? Is there a particular moment of service you’d like to remember? Leave a comment below!
A HUGE THANK YOU to Spencer and all of our vets who have and are currently protecting our freedoms.
