La Jolla Sports Club Personal Trainer, Candy Agundez, takes you through a beach bodyweight workout!
First off, have you met your newest La Jolla Sports Club Personal Trainer, Candy Agundez? You’ve probably seen her smiling face as you’re walking into the gym, but you’ll now be seeing a lot more of her, and downstairs at that.
Secondly, have you seen the sun lately? I know, right?! It’s finally back! May Gray and June Gloom behind us, it’s time to do what we do in San Diego and hit the beach. Windansea and La Jolla cove might be jammed up, but there are a ton of secret spots to do your own beach workout, so once you get that dialed in…
Lucky for you, Candy loves a sandy workout, so here are some of her favorite bodyweight exercises to knock out with a cool ocean breeze at your back.
Exercising on the beach offers the joy of being outdoors, in addition to a huge calorie blast and challenging moves for your joints, as the sand adds resistance and requires you to recruit those little stabilizing muscles.
When you’re going through these exercises, make sure the surface is flat / isn’t slanted—the instability could cause muscle imbalances and an awkward torque on the ankles, knees and hips.
Treat these exercises as a circuit, resting 20 seconds in between exercises. Once you have completed the entire circuit, rest 2 minutes and repeat until you have reached the duration of 30 minutes. Have fun!!
Before getting started, be sure to do an approximate 5-minute warm up of jumping jacks, jogging, push-ups, etc., getting the heart moving and increasing blood flow to the areas you’re going to be working.
1. Walking / reverse lunges – 15-20 reps each leg
2. Jump squats- 20 reps
3. Wall push-up – 15 reps
4. Burpees- 10 reps
5. Adductors / pulse- 20-25 each leg
6. Sprints – 20 seconds
7. Push-ups + donkey kicks – 10 kicks each leg
8. Squats – 20 reps
9. Bird dogs/tall plank – 10 reps each side, 2 second hold
