Now Serving: Nutrition Programming!
New to La Jolla Sports Club‘s menu: Nutrition programming
Carl Israelsson, our only Precision Nutrition-certified personal trainer has spent the last few months creating and perfecting a nutrition program that can help kickstart your diet, get you out of a slump, give you the information you’ve needed, help you compete at a higher level, or just plain feel good.
Below you’ll find all the information you need, but if you have any extra questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our front desk or contact Carl directly.
Note: Carl’s program is very detailed, but don’t let that scare you off. He’s the guy we’d want helping us out if it were up to us. Wait, it is up to us! Well, we’re all in luck, then, here we go!
The first phase
All members are offered a complimentary introductory information session. In this short session, Carl will conduct a free body composition screening using the InBody 570 machine at Chiltonic, which is a cutting-edge measurement instrument.
Carl will spend a few minutes with you reviewing the results from the test, as well as give an overview of what the nutrition program provides and fielding any questions you might have. In addition, you will get a handout which outlines a number of elements critical to improving the quality of the foods you’re eating. If and when you enroll in the program, this food quality guide will be a valuable resource to reference as you progress through the program. Even if you don’t enroll, it offers valuable information that will help to make some meaningful changes to your eating habits immediately.
Upon enrolling, you will receive a comprehensive assessment package to complete, which includes assessment worksheets, questionnaires and a food journal log. It is designed to collect a wide variety of information essential to determining the best nutrition program, limitations, coaching strategies and specific indications and contraindications unique to each client. After completing that package, you are now ready to meet Carl for…

The second phase
In the second phase, you and Carl will meet for three sessions for your ‘Nutrition Foundations,’ all of which occur within a month.
Note: Everyone will get something different out of their Nutrition Foundations course. The Precision Nutrition system excels at identifying the appropriate level of intervention for each unique client. The same detailed food plan with exact supplement recommendations may be excellent for a more advanced client but frustrating and ultimately demotivating for a less-skilled client. Many people want a detailed meal plan, just like many people want to do challenging workouts they see on the CrossFit games. The reality for both scenarios is that most people haven’t earned advanced nutrition strategies just like most people haven’t earned advanced training strategies. For some less-skilled clients, the third session in their Nutrition Foundations course will include rather elementary changes while advanced clients may receive extremely nuanced and rather complex adjustments.
- The first session of Nutrition Foundations is an assessment and information-collection session. In this session, we review the assessment package, clarify unclear elements, perform additional body composition measurements and collect a few other data points. While it might seem a little daunting, it’s a great opportunity to get to know each other, share your habits, ambitions and concerns and create an objective baseline that will be referenced as you progress through the program.
- The second meeting of the Nutrition Foundations phase is the initial consultation session. At this session, Carl will share his findings from the information gathered from the assessment package and the data collected from the first session. In this phase, you’ll receive assessment results and recommendations; help identifying limiting factor(s); establish coaching priorities; outline the nutrition program objectives and set specific goals. The remainder of the session is dedicated to appropriate nutrition and supplement education.
- The third meeting of the Nutrition Foundations phase is a follow-up consultation. This is your chance to share progress, obstacles, what is working and what is not. Depending on your status, Carl may progress the dietary strategy or address those obstacles. Compliance is key in this stage–adding more things on top of a tough situation doesn’t help, so if needed, Carl will implement a program change. Ideally, the end of the third session represents a successful intervention of the first one, two, three–or more–of the highest-priority limiting factors to your success. This intervention ideally represents meaningful, albeit sometimes simple, habit changes for every level of client.
The third phase
The third phase is our nutrition curriculum subscription. This is a really cool ongoing membership that La Jolla Sports Club members who have gone through the Nutrition Foundations sessions can subscribe to on a recurring, monthly basis. The membership includes bi-monthly body composition screening on the InBody 570; one reassessment and follow-up consultation with Carl once a month; a virtual follow-up via email once per month and 24/7 email access to Carl with any questions or concerns that might pop up. The constant email access is great for questions that don’t need to wait for a full follow-up, such as supplement brand questions, local restaurant menu confusion, assorted food quality selection or any variety of troubleshooting tips specific to your nutrition program. This way, your questions are answered quickly by someone who knows you, your program and your individual history. This provides a beautiful framework for consistent accountability to reinforce compliance, appointment frequency to effectively manage nutrition program design adjustments, and constant contact for incidental needs so you will see the results you deserve.
Hoooooboy, that was a lot, but we are incredibly proud to offer this unique, personalized service from an incredibly dedicated personal trainer. You’re in good hands with Carl.
Have a great rest of the week / end, we’ll see you next week for our last nutrition blog, where we drop a ton of tips, some you might know and some that might surprise you!
