Introducing… Some New People!
Last week, we dropped this little gem: ‘The Tesla, your iPhone, Brick n Bell and La Jolla Sports Club– all are considered to be a work in progress. Building, breaking it down and editing and building again creates success.’
If you haven’t had a chance to read it, it’s all about resolutions. Actually, it’s an anti-resolution piece, which kicks around the idea of building your goals by exploration, both literal and metaphorical. It’s a good read.
Anyway, La Jolla Sports Club, as stated, is a work in progress, and we take pride in that. The underlying message being: We refuse to settle.
Which brings us to our post today. You have probably noticed that we do not have a lot of turnover with our Personal Trainers (voted best in La Jolla, by the way,) and we take pride in that, as well. But every so often, we get some new faces. La Jolla Sports Club is happy to introduce Brian Donahoe and Cali Tolbert, and instead of a boring run-down of certifications, thought we’d have a little fun. So…
Brian Donahoe
What brought you to San Diego / La Jolla Sports Club?
Holing up in a cramped NYC apartment with 2-year-old twins for half the year got less and less appealing. We needed that warm sunshine all year round.
I found LJSC through a top-rated google search and pestered Justin [our Fitness Manager] with calls for an interview. I booked a ticket for September with the intention of getting the job. A couple delays, but it’s January and my life in SD has finally begun.
Why did you choose to be a personal trainer? What was your dream job growing up?
I wanted to be an athletic trainer growing up because I had to opportunity at eight years old to be a waterboy on my oldest sister’s college basketball team. Watching the pregame stretching and the trainers tape ankles was exciting to me.
Also I loved pancakes as a babe, so I had starry eyes to be the Head Chef at IHOP.
(True story)
What is A.R.T., and how could it help with some of the aches and pains we get from golf, tennis and surfing?
A.R.T. or Active Release Technique is a treatment that aims to improve the quality of soft tissue in areas of the body which have adhered together and are short, tight, scarred and/or not moving in the proper fashion. The active portion allows the patient to lengthen the tissue under their control which has been proven to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Promoting increased bloodflow to the targeted area is the goal to ultimately increase the quality of range of motion.
If you could have dinner with any one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Martin Scorsese, with his ability to tell stories through his film work, I would imagine the dinner conversation to be incredibly entertaining.
If you were on a deserted island, what three non-fitness things would you want with you?
- A net for a hammock/ fishing
- A glass bowl for starting a reflection fire and cooking
- Hockey skates–ask Tom Hanks, you never know when you may have to perform your own root canal
Cali Tolbert
What brought you to San Diego / La Jolla Sports Club?
I moved out here to San Diego in October with my husband after getting married. I’ve lived on the east coast for 24 years, so moving here was a huge change and a little challenging at first with being so far from family and friends. I searched fitness facilities around the area and La Jolla Sports Club had some of the best reviews by far! After doing a 5 day trial, I knew I wanted to become part of the family of trainers and instructors here.
Why did you choose to be a personal trainer? What was your dream job growing up?
My dream job when I was little was to own a business called “Rent a Pet” that allowed children to ‘rent’ a dog or cat for a week to prove to their parents they were responsible enough to have one of their own. Oddly enough I never pursued that and took on a career in the health and fitness field during my time in college. I desired to work in a positive environment where I could prevent future health risks and diseases with an active lifestyle.
What is currently your favorite style of workout, for both your clients and yourself?
Currently, my favorite workouts consists of trail running outside, yoga and TRX. My last gym did not have TRX, so I’ve been excited to get back to using them, as I have my TRX Suspension certification. For my clients, I like to incorporate functional movements using kettlebells and TRX, but I always ask if there’s anything they’re particularly interested in using.
If you could have dinner with any one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, it would probably be Jennifer Lawrence. I love her as an actor, but her real-life personality is hilarious, goofy, and someone I would enjoy having a burger and fries with.
If you were on a deserted island, what three non-fitness things would you want with you?
If I was on a deserted island and could bring three things with me, it would be a GPS, a raft, and an electric motor so I could get off the island haha.
But if I’m stuck there, I would bring my dog, Brodie; a kayak; and some good music.
Have you had success with ART? Any TRX tricks you’d like to learn from Cali? Leave a comment below!
OK, that’s it for this post, have a great weekend!
