Want to train like the pros? Just follow these easy tips from La Jolla Sports Club!
The Olympics are wrapping up this Sunday and the US has done pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty well. The uhhh… 33 (!!!) medals in swimming definitely helped. Soccer (nee’ football), however, has proven, yet again, to be a weaker point for the United States. Doesn’t mean we don’t love it, though! A few of our La Jolla Sports Club Personal Trainers played growing up, and Kevin Root is still out there twice a week, hoping scouts are on the sidelines. Possibly for the 50-under team.
Soccer conditioning has progressed a lot in recent years. Gone are the days of solely training skills and endurance. Breaking down the movements of soccer has helped create a more-rounded training program. Diving headers? Plyometrics. Chasing down a striker from a jog to full sprint? Interval training. Muscling a guy off the ball? Strength training.
A lot of these movements can be applied to any sport that requires quick, lateral, reactive, explosive moves (basketball, American football, etc), so if you’re feeling a little stale in your routine or want to up your game, add in a few of these exercises. As always, if you have any questions, grab any of your La Jolla Sports Club Personal Trainers–they’re here to help. OK, off to some of Kevin’s favorite soccer-specific exercises!
Note: You’re going to want a full-body routine that includes bodyweight and free-weight chest and back exercises, such as pullups and pushups; the below will focus on lower body and core exercises. Hey, why don’t you go to Kevin’s Tough Love and bootcamp classes for some of these already?! Click on the photos (thanks, Carl Israelsson!) for larger images .
What are some of your favorite athletic moves in the gym? How have they helped your game? Leave a comment below!
Alright, that’s it for us today, have a great week / end, and keep an eye out for our last Olympic-themed post!
