A fun, informative interview with La Jolla Sports Club Zumba / Dance instructor, Shannon
Welcome to the third installment of our group instructor interviews. Our first week covered Pilates instructor, Shanna; last week, we sat down with Spin instructor, Alberto; and below, you’ll learn a little about Zumba instructor, Shannon. Don’t forget to check our schedule to meet these great instructors and find a new, fun activity. OK, off to Shannon!
I have been dancing since the age of three at studios and on teams, and have made it a priority to keep dance-fitness classes a part of my weekly routine. After graduating from the University of Colorado, where I was on the dance team, I knew there was something missing from my life–I needed to dance again. I started taking Zumba / adult fitness / dance classes and knew that I had a new calling. I then got certified to teach Zumba / fitness classes and am incredibly happy that La Jolla Sports Club has become my dance outlet.
Please describe your favorite client success story, and also your favorite personal success story.
Many students have thanked me for bringing dance in to their lives, because it is a fun way to get your body and mind in shape. It is one hour of the day that helps people get their mind off of life’s stresses–when they can literally dance their troubles away. I try to encourage everyone who has not danced, because dance truly is for everyone. I feel personally successful when my students let themselves feel the music and have fun dancing without worrying about getting the moves perfect.
What is your favorite part of teaching?
My favorite part about teaching is watching people grow as dancers, and seeing the joy that it brings them.
What gets you up in the morning? What’s your daily motivation?
What gets me up in the morning? Coffee!… and the meowing of my lion shaved kitty cat, Capella. I find myself motivated to embark on the new day because I enjoy my job as a real estate agent, especially as it allows me to keep teaching a part of my life with my flexible schedule.
When you’re not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
When I am not teaching, I enjoy time with family and friends and believe it or not, I love to go out dancing! I enjoy taking hip-hop, burlesque, line dancing, barre and yoga classes, because it helps me continue to learn and grow as an instructor myself. I think it’s very important to focus on proper nutrition and living an active lifestyle. I love to travel and hope to visit more countries in the near future.
Real quick: Words of advice or wisdom
My words of wisdom… Find what makes you happy, and live your life surrounded by the people and things that bring out the best in you. The key in life is finding balance and keeping to the rhythm that works best for you. And of course, “Keep on Dancing!”
